Would you still listen to your music on a cassette? Would you still save your files on a floppy disk? Would you use a carrier pigeon to communicate instead of WhatsApp? So why do you still rely exclusively on Newsday or Express for your news? What once worked, may not necessarily work now or in the future.

We don’t need to be bound by Newsday or Express; San Paria Initiative is an online paper geared towards our generation. We’re not saying to ignore the other news sources, nor is this an article in self-promotion, but we need products and services that suit our needs and interests. Trinidad needs to experience a revolution. Not one involving rioting and picketing, but a mental/internal revolution. As the existing leadership fades away, it’s up to our generation to start developing into not just the leaders our country deserves, but the ones we need right now.

Our generation (“millennials” as they call us) has our own news, fashion, business and technologies. It is true that we cannot exist separate and apart from our elders but there’s a major disconnect between these two generations. Such is obviously inevitable because of the age gap and ever developing technology, but we must be careful not to overlook it. We have to be mindful of simply accepting the status quo and hoping that the generation above creates the Trinidad in which we dream of living.

Regardless of whether we are now approaching adulthood, entering into the working world or already building our empire, we must embrace the efforts of our peers- support, inspire and motivate each other! The existing leadership has their own agendas and have already achieved what they set out to. I am not advocating for us to wage war against the establishment but now is the time for us to start taking over. We have fresh and enthusiastic minds; and TOGETHER we have the ability to elevate the country to a higher level. It will take time but the REVOLUTION must start NOW!

You may ask whether we need revolution, or merely evolution. Just ask yourself: are we on course to become one of the world’s happiest and most successful nations? Or do we need drastic change to get Trinidad to the level we want it at?

I believe we need revolution- changed MIND-SETS and changed ACTIONS! We may need to see it as US against THEM! We must change the way we operate and interact- new technology, new businesses, new fashion, new art and new sources of news. San Paria Initiative aims to entertain, captivate and inspire teenagers and young adults. This is OUR news! Made for our generation, by our generation!

This is only the start for us all! We already have several businesses in Trinidad started by young entrepreneurs, but these companies must become market leaders. The co-founder and CEO of Snapchat was the youngest billionaire in the world at 25 years old. Mark Zuckerburg ranked as one of the 100 wealthiest and most influential people in the world, when he was only 26 years old. We must not just look at these amazing accomplishments as freak anomalies or once-in-a-lifetime occurrences. We must use this as motivation and realize that in these modern times, our STRENGTH lies in our YOUTH. In sport, just as in life, there comes a time when the young talent surpasses the experienced heads. Just as the sun rises after a long night, the young must transcend the old and bring fresh energy to rejuvenate our economy and society. THIS IS OUR TIME!
